Welcome to Year Six!

Staff Team:

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday – Miss Smith
Thursday & Friday – Miss Strevett
PE – Mr Innes (Tuesday) Mrs Weatherall (Friday) – Ignite Sports
Higher Level Teaching Assistants working in Y6 – Mrs Humphries and Mrs O’Grady
Assistant Teacher in Y6 – Mr Myers

Our Class Saint in Y6 is St Margaret Clitherow. Her feast day is the 26th March. On the feast day of their patron Saint the children can wear their own clothes in school, and we will be visiting the Bar Convent and the St Margaret Clitherow Shrine.

Every Tuesday after school is Dodgeball Club for the second half of the Spring term.

Please see the newsletters below and the school calendar for further important dates.

Religious Education

RE is our most important subject and is at the core of our curriculum. We do 2 hours of RE every week, a child led liturgy every week, and four other sessions of collective worship including Mass or celebration every Thursday.

PE Days

Our PE lessons this year are on Tuesday and Friday; lessons are with Mr Innes or Mrs Weatherall from Ignite Sports. PE will be either in the hall or outside. Please come to school in your kit (and ready for the weather) on your PE days.

Full P.E. kit includes: a white T-shirt, blue/black shorts or tracksuit bottoms and trainers for outdoor use.  Football tops are not permitted.

Equipment

Please support your child’s growing independance! They should routinely have in school:

  • Reading Diary
  • Warm Coat
  • Smart uniform – named
  • Named fresh water bottle
  • Healthy snack if desired

Reading Diaries will be checked every MONDAY. The children will use these to record their reading. They will also contain their weekly spelling lists.

We have a limited supply of headphones in class which the children sometimes use in lessons when using the chrome books. If your child has a set of headphones/ear buds at home that they can use in school, they are welcome to bring these in and use these instead. They will be responsible for them and they will be kept in their trays.

Preparing for SAT’s

SATs week is in May, and the Y6 children complete their final assessments with us. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we invite the children to come into school at 8:30am so we can have breakfast together. They should come in through the main school entrance.

Top Tips for SAT’s Week:

  1. Complete the homework activities.
  2. Don’t panic – you ARE ready and all you need to do is your best.
  3. Believe in yourself – you can do this!
  4. Whether it is with us or at home, make sure you have a good breakfast each day.
  5. Get a good night sleep!

Any children arriving after 8:40am should come through the main gate as usual. We also ask that all children are in school by 8:45am on these days.

Moving on up!

Families of children in Year 6 should apply for a secondary school place by the 31st October. Please note that applying early does not give any priority, although to have the best chance of your application being successful you should complete and submit your application by the deadline.

[smart-box title=”Key Dates for the City of York ‘Secondary Round’ Admissions Process”]September-October 2025 – Secondary School Engagement Opportunities
12th September 2025 – Applications open
31st October 2025 – Deadline for applications
1st March 2026 (or the next working day) – National Offer Day
13th April 2026 – Appeal forms to be returned
April – June 2026 – Admission appeals heard[/smart-box]

There are a range of school engagement activities in September and October each year for prospective parents/carers to gain additional information for individual schools with Open Evenings usually held each autumn for prospective pupils, parents and carers to attend and view schools. Each school in York holds their event on a different evening – please do check their websites for details.

You may also need to provide additional information (such as proof of baptism), or complete a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) if you’re applying to a school which is outside your home area or which is a faith school such as your local Roman Catholic Secondary school.

Check with the school directly if a SIF is required, but always make your school place application to your home Local Authority. For families who live in York, this is the City of York Council. They advise parents and carers to read the Guide for Parents when applying for a school place, as it contains key information on school admissions and you can also find the Guide to School Catchment Areas online. We would advise you to keep checking on the City of York Council Admissions site to keep updated with key dates throughout the year.

Please click here for information on the NPCAT website about transition to secondary school.

Y6 Crucial Crew- we have been learning how to keep ourselves safe. We had workshops from the police, water safety, IDAS, the fire service, road safety and on the dangers of vaping. It reminded us of the importance of making good decisions. 😊 ... See MoreSee Less

🌟 Wow! What a performance! 🌟’I'm an 11-Year-Old... Get Me Out of Here!’ was absolutely brilliant – full of fun, laughter
and incredible talent. Our Year 6 children worked so hard both on and off the stage and their dedication truly shone through. We couldn't be prouder of them all. Well done Year 6 – you were amazing! 👏🏻
