The Department for Education introduced a statutory duty for schools to actively promote British Values, and to ensure they are taught in schools. The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy as:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
We promote British Values though our mission statement, our Religious Education, our own faith, our assemblies and collective worships, and our day to day life at St George’s Roman Catholic Primary School. They are woven into everything we do. We also promote British Values through our our curriculum and our inclusive learning. Staff strive to demonstrate British Values through our behaviour and to act as role models for our children.
At the centre of everything that we do are the messages and teachings of Jesus. Through his example, we strive to make St George’s Catholic Primary School a happy and joyful place to be – a school full of love and a place of learning.
We have three simple virtues: Kindness, Curiosity and Courage. These are the character traits that we encourage and develop in every member of our school community.
We believe that in promoting our Catholic Values and these core virtues, we cannot fail to promote these fundamental ‘British Values’. We are all created equal in the sight of God and we teach that all should contribute to the common good, and be treated with full respect.
